Baseball and Softball Updates

by Max Bottenfield

MVHS Baseball and Softball faced off against Maranacook last Monday here at Mount View. The boys came away with a 6-1 victory over the Black Bears in 7 innings. Junior Noah Hurd threw 14 strikeouts while only allowing 2 hits. Junior Collin Jones had a three-hit ball game including 2 singles and a double. Baseball continues to keep improving its record with a win against MCI after making the trip to Pittsfield. The Softball team had hoped to bounce back after a 10-0 loss to Maranacook but was unable to beat MCI. The baseball record stands at 5-6. Softball is trying to get back in the playoff picture in these upcoming weeks toward the end of the season.

Baseball and Softball Updates

by Max Bottenfield

MVHS baseball went 2-0 in a doubleheader last weekend against Old Orchard Beach. The Mustangs didn’t even need to play the full 7 innings to tally two impressive victories. In the first game, senior Levi Winslow pitched a 53-pitch complete game through 5 innings of work as the Mustangs got the bats hot to start off the day with a 11-1 victory. The dominance continued on to the next game on the mound and on the scoreboard. Junior Noah Hurd pitched a complete game through 6 shutout innings, not allowing one run to cross home in a commanding 10-0 win. Softball split 1-1 on Saturday as they lost the first game 14-13, Freshman Esmae Cote tallied 3 hits in the loss. The first game misfortune didn’t stop the Mustangs from coming back in the second game with an outstanding 23-13 victory, Junior Payton Munro got her first varsity win in the circle with two strikeouts through 4 ⅓ innings. Esmae Cote continued her impressive performance as well. She ended a home run shy of a cycle with a single, double, triple, and four runs scored!

Spring Sports Update

by Max Bottenfield

MVHS Baseball and Softball squared off yesterday in a regular season matchup with St. Doms. It wasn’t a fortunate day for either team as both walked away with a loss. The Baseball game was a low-scoring affair ending in a 1-0 score in favor of St. Doms. Both teams combined only had 3 hits so it was a pretty defensive game with Senior Calvin Jewitt recording the only hit for Mt. View late in the game to avoid a no-hitter. The softball game was quite the contrary as St. Doms tallied more than 20 runs to Mt.View’s 7. Despite the outcome, it’s still early in the season for both teams, so this one loss doesn’t make or break the season. Both teams look to bounce back this weekend as they will take a long trip to Traip Academy for a doubleheader at 1pm.

The second track meet of the season is scheduled for Friday this week. The track team will make the journey to Camden Hills for a 3 o’clock meet.

Softball and Baseball Preseason Action

by Max Bottenfield

Softball and Baseball preseason starts this week at MVHS. Tuesday is the first set of games this week for the Mustangs as they face off against PCHS at 4pm. Later this week on Thursday both teams will go to Waterville to play a more familiar KVAC opponent. Some warm April weather is making for a good opening week as both teams try to start off strong and prepare for the long regular season. Baseball looks to build on a good run last season as I believe most of the team is returning from last year. Softball also has a good group of returning players that will hopefully be able to lead the team to a playoff run later in the year. Wins and losses in the preseason have no effect on the regular season standings, so this week is really just a time for coaches to refine their lineups and also for some younger players to get a taste of their first high school baseball experience.

ASVAB Testing

by Max Bottenfield

ASVAB Test

The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Assessment Battery) took place on April 4th in the library. The ASVAB test isn’t like a regular standardized test; it’s actually quite the opposite. The test helps students figure out what job they would be good at in the service or as a civilian. The number of jobs students would be fit for is determined by how high their score was. The higher the score, the more jobs, and the lower the score, the fewer jobs they qualify for. The test is broken into 9 different sections ranging from subjects like mathematics knowledge to auto and shop information and mechanical comprehension. Mr. Basset “Highly encourages every student to take this test even if they aren’t interested in the military” whenever it is available. The ASVAB is also a good way to see different skill sets that you possess that you might not know about. On April 12th, the students who took the ASVAB test this time will be having a review session of the test and the results.

Husson Alive

by Max Bottenfield

Husson Alive is a free day-long event hosted by the New England School of Communications and the College of Business, located at Husson University. This event will be held on May 9 of this year. This event will be a great opportunity for students to partake in a variety of hands-on educational workshops. At Husson Alive, students have their own choice of what activity they would like to attend. There will be about 250-300 students attending this event, and in addition to its educational benefit, it will also be a good way for students to figure out what they may be interested in pursuing in college and/or a future career. Two breakout sessions will take take place; one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Students attending this event will have plenty of time to explore all the different workshops that catch their interest. As the day comes to an end, students will get the opportunity to be a part of the audience for the Nite Show, which is filmed and produced by students of Husson University. It’s a very cool and interactive experience for those who would like to learn more about what Husson University has to offer.

If you are a student who is interested in attending this trip, please see Mr. Basset for signup information.

Playoff Basketball

by Max Bottenfield

Playoff Basketball is in full swing here at MVHS, the Mustang’s boys and girls teams both have preliminary games scheduled for this week. Both teams because of heal points have to, unfortunately, travel for their playoff games so sadly we don’t get to host one here at MVHS. Although, if you have the opportunity to go to either of the games and support our teams, I encourage you to do so. The girls played first this week in their game against Houlton who they hadn’t faced this year. It was a tough game up in the county after that 2 ½ hour bus ride, which is no joke. As for the boys, they travel down to Washington Academy to a more familiar opponent. They have already met twice in the regular season with the Mustangs coming out on top both times. This is a big game for the boys as it decides whether their season is over or if there is more in store for them in the tournament.

Come show your support at MVHS Senior Night

by Max Bottfield

This week in MVHS Basketball both teams face off against Winslow, Maranacook, and Waterville. So far this week, neither team has come away with a win. On Tuesday, both teams fell to Winslow, and on Wednesday, both teams lost again to Maranacook. Tonight, Waterville is on the schedule. The girls take the trip to Waterville in this cold weather, and the boys get to stay at home. It’s also senior night for the boys’ team as they play their last regular season home game at MVHS. Issac Ellis, Nick Cobb, Tyler Russell, Max Bottenfield, Ryan Oliver, Cameron Rae, Brock Cassidy, and Joe Morse, along with senior cheerleader Sydney Bishop are all being honored tonight for their contribution to MVHS Basketball over the years. The Boys won the last time the two teams played in December. Although, for the first half, it was a pretty hard-fought contest. The Girls also are in need of some wins down the stretch if they hope to improve their position for the playoffs.

Recent Games

by Max Bottenfield

This week MVHS Boys’ & Girls’ Basketball teams have 2 games. Medomak Valley on Tuesday and Belfast on Friday. Medomak Boys came to MVHS to take on the boys in what ended up being a close contest for the duration of all 4 quarters. The game started off with Senior Max Bottenfield having the hot hand and putting up 16 first-quarter points. Senior Tyler Russell was still putting up points and drawing fouls despite playing with a busted pinky on his shooting hand. The score going into half was 39-33 Mustangs. Junior Noah Hurd started to heat up in the second half as he drained a handful of threes and made a pair of clutch free throws at the end to seal the game for the Mustangs. The final score was 73-69 Mustangs, who have snapped a two-game losing streak and have split the season series 1-1 with Medomak. The Girls were on the road again on Tuesday as they made the trip down to Medomak Valley. The trip was not as prosperous as they had hoped it to be as they came away with a loss but it’s looking like they will get rid of this losing streak on Friday against Belfast.
