Basketball Season Comes to a Close

by Noah Hurd

Ugh! Well, the Boys’ Basketball team fell just short of a state championship. They fought hard all season, and they brought the community together like never before. The support from this community was unbelievable. It meant a lot to the players and coaches to see this community come together and cheer the boys on, even though it wasn’t the season they hoped for. They have a lot to be proud of. What they accomplished, winning a Northern Maine Championship, which hasn’t been done here in 37 years. Playing in a state championship was unbelievable. We walked in and just saw nothing but green in the stands, and the crowd started cheering for us when there was still an hour to go before game time.

With the spring season right around the corner, be sure you sign up. You can sign up on Mr. Wilcox’s door in the gym. If you don’t play a sport but want to, just go out and try it.

KVAC All Conference Honors

by Orion Hudson

Today I spoke to Mrs. Perkins in the Counseling Office about a program called Y.A.N.A. which is something I’ve never heard about until not long ago. I interviewed Ms. Perkins to learn more about Y.A.N.A., so that if it is something of interest to you, you can attend.

Me: What is Y.A.N.A?

Mrs. Perkins: It is a therapeutic group anyone is welcome too. It’s a drop-in group which means you don’t have to come in consistently, which means you can come in whenever you want. It’s a confidential space where students can talk with their peers for support as well as myself.

Me: Who is Y.A.N.A. for?

Mrs. Perkins: It’s for anyone who is interested in sharing their emotional perspective and connecting with other people who have similar experiences or not.

Me: How widespread is Y.A.N.A.?

Mrs. Perkins: Currently, it’s not that widespread. I have a handful of students currently, but I’d love to see it more widespread and accepted into our normal activity in our school.

Me: Are there any plans for Y.A.N.A in the future?

Mrs. Perkins: I would love to if there is interest in it. I’d like to turn it into a mental health club in the school, but I need more helpfulness and more participation.

The Maine Winter Romp

by Schuyler Hunt

Winter Romp is an annual Land Rover-focused event that takes place in Benton, Maine. The host of The Maine Winter Romp is Bruce Fowler, and people venture from all over the United States to participate in this event. It was formed for owners of Land Rovers where they can take their vehicles and venture out onto trails to test their driving skills. Each year, Bruce Fowler hosts this event in the middle of February. In 2025, it will be from February 13th to February 17th. You must register on the Winter Romp website, which is free to do, and make sure that you have the proper requirements before you can go out onto the trails.

Sunday River Rescue Mission

by Jill Jewett

Winter in Maine brings many things, businesses boom, snowmobiles are taken out of the garage, and winter activities are in full swing. A staggering 1.3 million skiers and boarders (those who snowboard) hit the Maine slopes every year. On Thursday, February 22nd, the day started pretty normal for skiers at the Sunday River Resort in Newry, Maine. However, at 11:09 a.m., the lift operator of the lift called “Aurora Quad” noticed a mechanical issue within the lift. The lift was stopped right away, and within ten minutes, Sunday River Patrol, with help from lift operators and Mountain Hosts, started a rope evacuation from the chairlift. The evacuation was completed by 1:46 p.m. and everyone was safely removed from the lift.

A Massachusetts family shared a photo taken from the ski lift that demonstrates how high up they were as they were rescued from the lift.

Sunday River says the lift will be on hold as mechanics inspect the issue, they also said that it did go through daily inspection and passed all checks before opening that morning.

Five Must Visit New England State Parks

by Mary Macary

As someone who loves nature, state parks are a wonderful way to get out of the house and go hiking and exploring beautiful, safe areas. As the nice weather slowly but surely approaches, these five state parks are some to consider visiting!

  1. Franconia Notch State Park

Franconia Notch State Park, is located in New Hampshire. It got its name from Franconia Notch, a well-known mountain pass in northern New Hampshire. This park has a lot to offer, including skiing. If you like to ski, then you might be glad to hear that this state park is home to Cannon Mountain, a premiere ski area containing 11 lifts that service 285 acres of skiing that covers the terrains of two mountains and the highest ski area summit in New Hampshire. Apart from skiing, this park also offers swimming at beaches, boat rentals, kayaking, fishing, hiking, and many winter activities. No matter the season there is always something to do for active people at Franconia Notch State Park.

  1. Baxter State Park

If you want to hike, camp, and explore, then Baxter State Park of the northern Maine woods is the place for you. Many maps are available to view the potential trails to hike on, of which there are more than 215 miles of, many of which are located on Mount Katahdin. If you’re looking for a challenge, trails on the Katahdin are very strenuous, but if you’re not up for the challenge, there are still many miles of trails for you. With camping reservations made up to four months in advance, there are plenty of opportunities for you to land a spot in one of the 337 campsites. Exploration is made possible with the 209,644 acres of land that this state park covers.

  1. Smugglers Notch State Park

A park with a rich history, Smugglers Notch State Park, runs through the Green Mountains in Vermont. This park was utilized in the early 1800s after the Embargo Act forbade American trade with Canada and Great Britain. Vermont, being so close to Montreal, was hit hard by this, so through this state park, illegal trade with Canada continued. The park was then later used by slaves as an escape route to Canada. Aside from its rich history, this park has a lot to offer, with many historic structures, campsites, a 3.5 mile long scenic highway, biking paths, and the unique offers of cave exploring and ice climbing. For history lovers or people looking for a hands-on camp experience, this state park is the one to visit.

  1. Crawford Notch State Park

Accessible to leashed pets, Crawford Notch State Park located by the notorious White Mountains of New Hampshire, is a wonderful place to bring a family. This versatile park offers plenty of camping opportunities as well as places to golf, swim, hike, boat, , bike, horse ride, sightsee and more. You can even shop and see live theater entertainment. In addition to the seemingly endless opportunities, Crawford Notch has beautiful views and places to visit such as a historic museum called The Frost Palace, scenic drives that allow you to see great mountains and unique views of nature, thousands of hiking trails, and stunning waterfalls. All of this is accompanied by incredible wildlife, ranging from moose to rainbow trout. The Crawford Notch State Park has a little bit of something for everyone!

  1. Acadia National Park

Last, but not least, is Acadia National Park. This beautiful area along the Atlantic Coast of Maine sits just next to the bustling town of Bar Harbor. With around 60 miles of coastline, more than 150 miles of hiking trails, and nearly 33 miles of motor roads with scenic views, Acadia National Park is massive. Not only impressive in size, Acadia National Park has some of the most beautiful views in the state of Maine. One of the most visited locations is the stunning Cadillac Mountain, known for being the highest point on the Eastern Seaboard in the USA. Another excellent view is at Jordan Pond where you can look at the prominent mountains bordering it, including the Bubbles, mountains that, as their name suggests, look like bubbles. Not only can you look at the Bubbles, but you can hike them too!

In their first game there, they played the 2nd seed Fort Kent in the quarterfinals. The Mustangs came out hot and won the game 78-44. An Interview with Mr. Gray

by Orion Hudson

Did you know our Principal Mr. Gray is in a band? Well, if not, then you’re in for a treat. The band is The Right Track. I interviewed Mr. Gray to learn more about him and his band.

Me: How did the band come to be?

Mr. Gray: So the founder of the band is Tom Rodman. He is a retired New York executive, and when he moved to Maine after retiring, he wanted to start up a band in the Camden area. He was in a band when he was young and missed it. When he retired to Camden, he started networking to find musicians.

Me: What instrument do you play?

Mr. Gray: In the band, I’m lead vocals. I play guitar, but only at home not in the band.

Me: How did you get into music?

Mr. Gray: I was always kind of musically inclined, playing piano and clarinet as a kid. Then I realized as a teenager that I could sing really well, joined the chorus, and in college, I was in an acapella group. After college, I moved to Maine and began singing at events like weddings and funerals. I also sang in an impromptu teacher band, and that’s how Tom Rodman heard about me.

Me: What’s your favorite genre of music?

Mr. Gray: It is impossible to say. It depends on my mood

Me: Do you have any upcoming gigs?

Mr. Gray: This Friday, February 16th.

At the Elks Lodge. It’s put on by Out! Maine.

Me: How long has your band been around?

Mr. Gray: 8 years.
