Students Demonstrate for Dress Code Rights

by Brooklynn Brown

On 4/14/23 Mount View High School students participated in a walk-out demonstration, to stand up for student rights towards the dress code. Students gathered in the high school lobby, for a couple of minutes before there was a speech given by Mount View senior Frankie Roberts. As this speech was given in front of students, staff, and our very own school board members, this speech brought smiles to our teachers’ and students’ faces as Frankie spoke their speech with strong passion. The speech was very moving and said all of the right things, some really moving parts from the speech were “No one should be punished for having a body”, “I am a female-presenting student with a body. I am a strong, passionate leader and student of MVHS. I wear amazing outfits. For this, I should not be punished.” After the speech was finished we were moved into the gym to give other students a chance to speak their feelings. Among these students was Erika Hanks who added,”We have been able to live out the majority of this school year without a dress code. No fires have been set, no coups have been established, and no school property has been destroyed, because of the lack of dress code.”

Time for this demonstration was provided by school administrators so that student voices could be heard. The students were respectful and came together in this peaceful demonstration to fight for a cause that they share.

Netflix Show Review- The Night Agent

by Brooklynn Brown

This year, 2023, a new, interesting, and action-packed show was released on Netflix. The show is called The Night Agent, and so far, it has a span of 10 episodes with each episode lasting 45-55 minutes. This show starts off with Rose Larkin, (Luciane Buchanan) a girl who lives with her Aunt and Uncle. However, disaster strikes and a strange occurrence causes their demise. Right before their death, they give the girl a phone number to call, as well as 4 code words. When Rose calls the number she was given, she reaches the phone number of a mysterious man; he sits in the basement in complete isolation, awaiting a call from a phone that never rings. This man is Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso.)

He protects and watches over Rose from the sidelines, despite being shot at and followed everywhere he goes. The person that Rose and Peter thought they could trust in the White House turns out to be the one person behind all of their troubles; but even if it comes down to the President being bombed, Peter will do anything to protect this girl.

I really enjoyed this show. It moved quite fast, but it was still easy to follow nonetheless, and there was almost never a dull moment throughout the runtimes of each episode. Every episode was full of action that kept me captivated and excited for more. Overall, if you are a fan of action, thriller, and drama, I recommend watching this series.

Temperatures Plummet this Weekend

by Brooklynn Brown

Maine is about to see the coldest weekend in the last decade. The temperature for this day and onward will be record-breaking. It is expected to continue to drop throughout today and through the weekend, with -25 degree weather and 30 mph winds. There is a possibility that, hopefully, the weather will return to average temperatures by Sunday.

Some important pieces of advice for this dangerous drop in temperature are…

  • Keep your cold water trickling to prevent your pipes from freezing.
  • Cover up completely, and leave no open skin for more than 5-10 minutes.
  • Keep pets inside, as they can easily get frostbite, so only let them out for 5 minutes max.
  • This cold weather will pose a threat to car batteries, have a fully charged vehicle if you must go out.
  •  Make sure to have extra clothing, snacks, and drinks set aside in preparation.

Some students are especially concerned about their pets. One student is worried about her pets staying outside for too long and getting too cold, and is also worried about the water freezing and having to leave her house in this freezing weather. Many other students, including myself, share these concerns as well. With that being said, bundle up and strap yourselves in for a record-breaking freeze, and stay safe!

The History of the Christmas Tree

by Brooklynn Brown

Christmas trees originally came from Germany. During the 16th century, Christians originally brought decorated trees into their homes. Martin Luther first added lighted candles to the trees. On a walk home, he admired the stars twinkling against the trees, and this inspired his idea to put candles on the trees.
